Specialized Capabilities in Oil and Gas Electronics Design

We combine embedded systems expertise with a deep knowledge of oil and gas industry requirements. We deliver end-to-end oil and gas product engineering across the entire development lifecycle, from concept validation through field deployment.

“Most oilfield hardware problems are not design problems or manufacturing problems. They are handoff problems; decisions made in design that nobody validated on a production line.”

Downhole and Subsea Electronics

We design and develop downhole electronics design solutions that operate reliably in high-temperature, high-pressure environments. Our team engineers pressure housings, sensor interfaces, and data acquisition systems rated for depths exceeding 15,000 feet. We conduct environmental testing to validate performance under the extreme conditions encountered in reservoir exploration and production operations.

Hazardous Location Engineering Expertise

Our engineers hold certifications in hazardous location engineering oil and gas design standards. We develop electronics for Class I, Division 1 environments where explosive atmospheres present during normal operations. Our designs eliminate ignition sources through intrinsic safety circuits, non-sparking component selection, and rigorous testing protocols that exceed industry standards.

Upstream Oilfield Electronics Integration

We specialize in upstream oilfield electronics systems that integrate sensors, microcontrollers, and communication modules into harsh-duty applications. We design wellhead monitoring, artificial lift control, production optimization, and real-time data telemetry. Our solutions operate across temperatures from minus 40 degrees to 200+ degrees Fahrenheit while maintaining network connectivity and data integrity.

Energy Sector Electronics Manufacturing Support

Beyond design, we guide manufacturers through energy sector electronics manufacturing processes. We specify component sourcing strategies that balance cost, reliability, and supply chain resilience. Our team collaborates with contract manufacturers to establish build procedures, quality gates, and testing protocols that ensure repeatable, field-proven performance.

Typical Applications and Projects

We address a range of oil and gas engineering services that directly impact operational efficiency and safety for our clients.

Production Monitoring and Control Systems

We develop electronics that help operators collect, process, and monitor critical production data in real time.

Manufacturing Engineered In

Component selection, layout, and enclosure design account for build and test from day one, rather than being reworked after a design-only phase.

Pre-shipment Test Coverage

Every board is verified against a dedicated test fixture before it ships, so field failures get caught on the bench, not at the wellhead.

Custom Oilfield Electronics Hardware

Sensor Interface

Design matched to your existing instrumentation (load cell, position, pressure, current, vibration).

PCB Design and Layout

Size the enclosure and thermal environment of the installation.

Power Design

Engineered for wellsite conditions: solar/battery, generator, or grid tied.

Communications

Hardware including Modbus, cellular, or radio matched to your existing SCADA or field host.

Downhole Tool Electronics Design

Downhole is the hardest environment we design for. As a downhole tool electronics design company, we build boards that hold sensing and communication accuracy through heat, shock, and vibration, with no technician available to service them.

Pelican designs downhole electronics around:

Derated component selection

Parts chosen for temperature and lifetime margin rather than nominal spec, so behavior stays predictable at depth.

Survivable board layout

Layout and mechanical support engineered for vibration and shock rather than bench conditions.

Firmware that degrades gracefully

Fault detection and safe states, so a sensor problem reports itself instead of failing silently.

Artificial Lift and Wellsite Control Electronics

Artificial lift and wellsite control is one clear application of this capability. Controllers automate rod pump, ESP, gas lift, or plunger lift systems, reading sensor data, running control logic, and reporting to SCADA so a well can be managed remotely instead of walked.

Control-loop logic for rod pump, ESP, gas lift, and plunger lift automation

Sensor signal processing and fault detection

Communications stack integration (Modbus and other field protocols)

Need to retrofit legacy controllers?

Upgrade capability without replacing existing infrastructure.

Retrofit and End-of-Life Oilfield Electronics

Not every project starts with a blank sheet. Operators running legacy equipment often need the electronics refreshed without redesigning the mechanical package or retraining field crews on a new interface.

Component End-of-Life

A microcontroller, sensor IC, or communications module is discontinued, and the board needs a redesign around currently available parts while preserving the existing footprint, connector layout, and firmware behavior the field crew already knows.

Capability Upgrade

Existing equipment is mechanically sound but needs new sensor inputs, updated communications (moving from radio to cellular, for example), or firmware modernization without a full hardware replacement across the field.

Industries We Serve

Our roots are in oil and gas, and that experience transfers. Pelican brings the same electronic design and manufacturing discipline to other regulated and demanding sectors.

Energy and Oil/Gas

Harsh-environment controllers, downhole sensor integration, and hazardous location (HazLoc) electronics for the Gulf Coast, Permian, and beyond.

Defense

Ruggedized embedded systems, secure telemetry, and reliable PCB assemblies built to withstand shock, vibration, and temperature extremes.

Medical Devices

Precision instrumentation electronics, low-noise analog signal processing, and adherence to lifecycle management and traceability requirements.

Food Safety

Automated monitoring and control electronics for compliance, hygienic environments, and precise thermal management.

Industrial Equipment

Custom motor drives, sensor interfaces, and IoT edge devices supporting legacy and modern industrial protocols such as Modbus and Ethernet/IP.

Direct Engineer Access

You reach the engineer working on your product, not a project coordinator relaying messages between you and the design team.

Design and Manufacturing

Under One Roof We are not a design shop that hands off production. The team that designs the hardware also builds it in Lafayette, LA, across three in-house manufacturing lines producing more than 100,000 boards a year.

Built for Gulf Coast and Permian Conditions

We design the realities of field deployment, heat, vibration, dust, and remote installations, not a lab bench.

Verifiable Quality Practice

ISO 9001 certified, IPC-A-610 certified assembly staff, four licensed Professional Engineers, and pre-shipment test-fixture verification on every board.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an oil and gas electronics engineering firm actually do?

We design and build the electronic hardware and firmware inside oilfield equipment: downhole tool electronics, artificial lift and wellsite controllers, monitoring and telemetry modules, and surface control electronics. That includes schematic design, PCB layout, firmware, enclosure design, and in-house assembly.

Both. Design and manufacturing run in the same Lafayette facility, across three production lines producing over 100,000 circuit boards a year. That is what makes one roof design and manufacturing oil and gas electronics practical rather than a marketing line: your board is built by the team that designed it.

Yes. Hazardous location work is a core part of our oilfield electronics design and manufacturing, covering intrinsic safety approaches, enclosure requirements, and component selection for Division 1 and Division 2 environments. Our engineers have designed Class I, Div 1 and Div 2 systems for energy and industrial applications.

Not in-house. Our work is electronic hardware, firmware, and PCB assembly. We do have partner firms that handle PLC design and implementation, and we can coordinate with them on projects where that scope is needed.

Yes. Component end-of-life redesign is regular work here. We can redesign the board around currently available parts while preserving the existing footprint, connector layout, and firmware behavior, so field crews do not have to relearn the equipment.

Yes. Rapid prototyping is part of how most projects start, and because production is in the same building, moving from a prototype to a low- or medium-volume run does not mean qualifying for a new manufacturer.

No. We are based in Lafayette, LA and meet in person with Gulf Coast clients, and we support operators and OEMs elsewhere through remote kickoff, shipped prototypes, and on-site support. Our team has commissioning and field experience from West Texas to North Dakota.
